Yoga Mudra For Weight Loss

Yoga Mudra For Weight Loss

What is Yoga Mudra?

Mudra means “seal,” “gesture,” or “mark.” Yoga mudras are symbolic gestures often practiced with the hands and fingers. They facilitate the flow of energy in the subtle body and enhance one's journey within.

Yoga mudras are the symbolic hand, eyes & body gestures that are based on the principle of Ayurveda to heal and redirects energy in the different organs of the body.

Yoga Mudras, along with being a part of Yoga, are also a part of rituals in different traditions like Hinduism and Buddhism. Mudras in yoga are practices in conjunction with Pranayama and Meditation to redirects the flow of life-force (Prana).

The universe is made of five elements, and each of the five fingers is represented by one of these elements. The thumb represents the fire, as well as universal consciousness. The index finger represents air and individual consciousness.

The middle finger represents akasha or connection. The ring finger represents earth, and the little finger the element of water. When these five elements are not in balance, we can experience disease in the body. Mudras are one way of creating a balance between all of these elements within us. Read on and attune yourself with some of these common mudras.

What are the types of mudras?

  • Gyan Mudra (Mudra of Knowledge)
  • Prana Mudra (Mudra of life)
  • Shunya Mudra (Mudra of Emptiness)
  • Apan Mudra (Mudra of Digestion)
  • Surya Mudra (Mudra of the Sun)
  • Varun Mudra (Mudra of Water)
  • Ling Mudra (Mudra of Heat)

How do you practice mudras?

Start each Mudra session by "washing" your hands (rub your hands against each other about 10 times, hold hands before your Navel Chakra) this will help energy to flow in your hands.

To perform Dhyani Mudra, place both hands like bowls in your lap, with the left hand on top and two thumb-tips touching.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Consider, the human body an electric circuit in which current (energy) is flowing through wires (Nadis of the body).
  • These wires (Nadis) connects the different parts of the electrical circuit (body organs). There are 5 main terminals (5 elements described above) of this circuit which either begin or end in hands or feet.
  • When you hold or press a particular finger in yoga mudra, the corresponding energy center or gland stimulates in the brain (Power supplier of the circuit).
  • In this way, the brain got a signal to alter the energy pattern within the body & it does it by regulating Prana flow.

  • Bend your little finger and ring finger and press them against the tip of the thumb. Keep the other two fingers (index & middle) lightly stretched or free as per your comfort.
  • Practice it daily for 30 – 45 minutes during the morning to energize the body & stimulates the Prana with conscious breathing.
  • As the working of the Prana Mudra is closely associated with the root chakra, it’s beneficial to awaken the kundalini energy of the body.
  • Prana mudra improves the attentiveness and presence of mind ability when practiced regularly. This also helps in relieving stress and anxiety problems.
  • Optical nerves present in the tip of the little & ring finger stimulated with prana mudra thereby it’s good practice to cure vision-related problems.

  • To practice Apana mudra brings the tip of the ring and middle finger in contact with the tip of the thumb. keep the other two fingers (index & little) lightly stretched straight.
  • Practice the Apan mudra for 45 minutes most preferably during the morning, but you can also practice it other time of the day.
  • As in Apan Vayu mudra, Ether and Earth elements unites with the fire element, it brings equanimity between the upper and lower organs of the body.
